Do I need to become a member with ISS to receive consideration?
Yes, administrative candidates must establish a professional file with ISS to apply for Head of School, principal, or other administrator positions listed with ISS if you want access and notification from our system. Schools will post jobs in our system and notifications will be sent out. If, however, you are applying for a specific search being conducted by the ISS Administrative team, then administrators can create a file for that specific job. Each job notification for searches contracted by ISS will contain a code to use to bypass the fee. Again, this is for creating a file specific to a search. Candidates who have created a file with ISS for a specific search can upgrade to an ISS candidate, for full access to the system, at any time. Contact the Ed Staffing Team if you wish to do this.
When is a good time to apply with ISS?
Although we do have a steady stream of candidates who apply and find positions throughout the year and jobs are added year round, please note that international schools typically begin recruiting for positions one full year in advance – which is why a new recruiting season starts September 1st. This also means that there will be the greatest number of jobs in our system during the fall and winter months, with the months of October, November, December, January and February being particularly busy. This is also the time when we host our International Recruitment Conferences (IRCs), where many international schools fill positions.
It is also important to remember that every new ISS candidate must go through a review process, and this can take time, especially if a candidate is waiting for crucial documents like returned confidential references. In order to take all of this into account, we recommend that our candidates apply with us in the summer and early fall. These candidates have the benefit of getting “ahead of the game” by acquiring what is needed for an active profile, polishing their professional dossier, and making sure everything is perfect – and when September 1st comes along, they’re the first candidates our recruiters can look at!
Is prior overseas teaching or administrator experience required?
International experience is often preferred, but not required.
Is certification required?
Some schools and/or countries will require administrative certification from an educational authority, i.e. a state, a province or national ministry. ISS does not require this type of certification for candidate registration. However, non-certified administrative candidates should be aware that some positions may require administrative certification.
Do candidates need to speak the language of the country in which they are seeking employment?
No. However, search committees will often give preference to candidates who have a working knowledge of the host country language.

Our team has the know-how to guide you, and the passion and personal touch to make that next overseas recruiting decision a little less daunting.
GOWho are the people most likely to be hired for Head of School positions?
Search Committees develop a profile of the candidate who can provide the type and style of leadership the school needs at the particular period of time when the search is conducted. Although many qualifications and characteristics are common to announcements for different schools, the leadership style, skill set, and qualifications for each position are different. These committees seek candidates who will lead their school to a higher level of their strategic plan or vision. Some schools may be interested in a specific skill set, such as experience with construction, curriculum, finances, marketing, or development/advancement. Candidates whose skill set, qualifications and experience match those desired are selected as finalists, and will be brought to the school for final interviews.
Are there openings for principals and assistant principals?
Yes. Principal vacancies are recruited throughout the school year, as well as through the International Recruitment Conferences. ISS hosts an Administrative Recruitment Day, typically during the first US recruitment conference. Conference registration is separate from the membership application. Larger schools often recruit principals early in the academic year and will bring in finalist candidates to the school site for interviews and meeting with faculty and members of the school community. Candidates seeking a position as a Head of School need not attend an IRC as these positions are not recruited at IRC events.
What type of positions are recruiters typically looking to fill?
Recruiters are looking for:
How do I submit reference letters?
As you complete your online application form you will be asked for the names of at least two people as well as their email addresses. Once you have completed your application, these people will be contacted by ISS and asked to fill out an online form which will take them no longer than 10 minutes to complete. The form will then be submitted directly back to ISS as these will be your confidential references. These confidential references are of the utmost importance to the community of international school Heads. While two confidential references/recommendations are required to create your file with ISS, we encourage you to list as many people’s names and email addresses as you would like to support your candidacy.
Are you married to someone who is not an educator who will, or will not, wish to accompany you?
If your spouse or partner is not an educator, but would like to accompany you, please be aware that the school sponsors both of you (and your family). Some schools are unable to consider those with non-teaching spouses due to visa restrictions for those who will not be employed by the school. Also, it may not be possible for the spouse to obtain a work permit for any type of work in some countries. We want you to know this could be a major challenge, and being prepared for this will help you when searching for positions. If your spouse or partner is not an educator and is NOT accompanying you, then some international schools are reluctant to hire teachers with dependents left behind. Schools are sometimes concerned about the candidate’s commitment to the contract with their significant other is not with them. In order to address these concerns, we ask that your spouse write a Partner Statement to include in your profile. In this Statement, your spouse can share his/her background, interests, personal thoughts about living abroad and explain to the school Heads what he/she will do with his/her time while you are employed by the school. She/he must clearly indicate that they are not seeking a position at your school. The Partner Statement is a required part of your application if you have a non-teaching spouse/dependent.
Are you and your partner/team member not married?
Couples who are unmarried may find it challenging to find placement in some regions. The reason is that some of the schools we serve are in conservative communities, and some countries actually deny visas to those traveling as a couple who are not married. Schools may provide housing and a certain number of the schools adhere to the parameters that staff who share housing in their school community must be married. Some schools feel there is more employment security when hiring married couples in terms of stability throughout the length of the two year contract. We should also add that ISS does place a number of unmarried couples each year, but it is best to prepare you for the fact that some positions may not be available to you.
Are you in a same sex relationship?
ISS does not discriminate based on sexual orientation. Please be aware, though, that international schools are subject to the laws of the country in which they reside. Some of the countries that host international schools have laws regarding open same sex relationships. We encourage you to investigate the legal environment of your prospective host country prior to accepting an offer of employment.
Are you, your family and dependents in excellent health?
Health issues should be considered when making the decision to apply for a job overseas. Depending on what part of the globe you are considering, members need to be aware that in some remote areas, medical services might not be at the same standard or availability as in the United States or Canada, UK or Australia. Members should not put themselves in a situation that might compromise their health if they know a condition exists.
Do you have excellent references that can support your administrative career?
Hiring schools ask for each candidate’s references, and all ISS member candidates need to obtain a reference from their current administrator. Your current administrator needs to complete an online confidential letter of recommendation that will be available to schools. International schools need to be able to review and contact your references as they consider you for a position. Schools will contact you first, and interview you if they are interested, but to ensure you are a strong candidate with ISS, you do need to be ready to ask for these references and have them returned to ISS as confidential letters to support your candidacy. In addition to your current administrator, letters of recommendation covering your past seven years are needed and are what schools would like to see!
