Ensuring Success: Board Training & Consulting

On-going Attention to Board Development is a Wise Investment

The health of any school's Board and the strength of its relationship with school leaders are critical to the overall operation of the school and standing with the rest of the community. While some schools realize deficiencies only after having to deal with a crisis, schools understand that ongoing attention to Board development is a wise investment, contributing to efficient and effective operations, while leveraging essential talent and resources. ISS has been a part of and witnessed the power of cohesive school leadership teams and offers Board seminars as a critical part of its executive services.

Board Seminars

Included in a Level III Head Search Contract, or can be offered as part of a separate Contract.

Depending on the Board’s development in terms of experience, longevity and efficacy, ISS offers governance seminars by qualified, internationally experienced facilitators. Each session is customized to specific needs of the governing Board. A number of seminars are offered as a part of a Level III Head Search contract. The duration of seminars range from a half day to three days—depending on the time the Board may devote to building its capacity to govern.

Boards may select from a menu of one or more of the following seminar topics:

  • Governance roles and responsibilities and those of the School Head
  • Relationships development, team building and Board etiquette
  • Increasing the capacity of the Board to perform its fiduciary, strategic and generative roles
  • Seminar 3.0, advancing the Board’s effectiveness from “good to great”

Other topics may be customized to the needs of the Board and School:

  • Establishing an initial Board: a governance model that best serves the school community
  • The role of the Board and school head in risk management and aversion
  • The Board’s self-assessment and renewal; the Head’s assessment and renewal
  • Establishing, charging and effectively utilizing Board sub-committees
  • Strategic planning: an essential process for the strategically-minded Board
  • Accreditation seminar: preparing for school improvement to advance student learning
  • Succession planning: Establishing a model for leadership continuity
  • Establishing and building an endowment and capital campaign
“…In the ISS facilitated board governance training workshop, Dr. Paul DeMinico was a dynamic speaker who is super-organized and he kept his audience of more than 100 professionals fully motivated for the whole day. Afterward, feedback was very affirming indeed, and all participants left feeling up-skilled and invigorated. I highly recommend Paul as an outstanding workshop presenter and we will use him again.”
