Depending on the Board’s development in terms of experience, longevity and efficacy, ISS offers governance seminars by qualified, internationally experienced facilitators. Each session is customized to specific needs of the governing Board. A number of seminars are offered as a part of a Level III Head Search contract. The duration of seminars range from a half day to three days—depending on the time the Board may devote to building its capacity to govern.
Boards may select from a menu of one or more of the following seminar topics:
- Governance roles and responsibilities and those of the School Head
- Relationships development, team building and Board etiquette
- Increasing the capacity of the Board to perform its fiduciary, strategic and generative roles
- Seminar 3.0, advancing the Board’s effectiveness from “good to great”
Other topics may be customized to the needs of the Board and School:
- Establishing an initial Board: a governance model that best serves the school community
- The role of the Board and school head in risk management and aversion
- The Board’s self-assessment and renewal; the Head’s assessment and renewal
- Establishing, charging and effectively utilizing Board sub-committees
- Strategic planning: an essential process for the strategically-minded Board
- Accreditation seminar: preparing for school improvement to advance student learning
- Succession planning: Establishing a model for leadership continuity
- Establishing and building an endowment and capital campaign
